However, Fox said, "tourists take the brochures home, and towards the end of the season, the educational material may be gone from rental units, so the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch will try some new things next year.

When it comes to ensuring the safety of the local Anna Maria Island sea turtles... it comes down to the turtles and the tourists.

That is were the local community and its support for the work done by Suzi Fox and her army of Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch volunteers.
We always get asked for ideas of where to go and what to see when renting a bike on Anna Maria Island.
Well, if you are vacationing on Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Lido Key... or somewhere else in the area of Anna Maria, and you want to rent a bike and go for a peddle... one of the most suggested bike trips is Robinson Preserve.
Robinson Preserve is a very scenic and beautiful bike tour. It's actually located in northwestern Bradenton, in the Palma Sola area, across the street from the Palma Sola Botanical Gardens.
Anna Maria Island is the largest of the Bradenton-Sarasota islands. Sometimes called Anna Maria Key, Anna Maria Island is a barrier island on the coast of Manatee County, on the central west coast of Florida.
Anna Maria Island is bounded on the west by the Gulf of Mexico, on the south by Longboat Pass (which separates it from Longboat Key), on the east by Sarasota Bay and Sarasota Pass, and on the north by Tampa Bay.
Anna Maria Island is approximately seven miles long north to south, with a latitude of 27.513N and longitude of -82.719W.
Anna Maria Island has three distinct communities, Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach and Anna Maria City.
It's been said that Dolphins and Anna Maria Island go together like beer and football, and it's true. Anyone that has traveled to this subtropical island on the Gulf of Mexico knows the local Dolphins are as at home as the Turtles.
It is very common to see Dolphins frolicking around in the waters surrounding our beautiful island.

Although Anna Maria Island Dolphins are a treasure for the locals and tourists alike, they are also of interest to a community of scientists tracking and studying them. There have been a number of Dolphins tagged off Anna Maria over the years in order to track their movements and hopefully learn a little bit more about them.
According to a recent story published earlier this year, one of these precious specimens had provided almost 40 years of information before washing up on a shore near Anna Maria Island.

The beach at Bean Point is spectacular!
White sands and crystal blue water, need I say more? We had a dolphin swim right by us, and found many shells and sand dollars. My son even spotted a live starfish on the sandbar.
The most beautiful natural beach in Florida. Most beaches in other parts of the world have to truck in sand this beautiful.
Don't forget, there is no lifeguard or shower/bathroom facilities. Its best to rent a beach condo on Bean Point, and leave the Mousey tourist traps for others!
Earlier this year we posted an article about the challenges artificial light imposes on the local Anna Maria Island turtle population.

Soon after we posted the article we began receiving comments. One comment inparticular was disturbing. It was a discription by one visitor of the magnitude of the lighting problem.
People on Anna Maria Island are generally quite well informed and educated about what can be done to ensure a healthy turtle nesting season, yet from this persons perspective not nearly enough was being done in regards to the lighting near beach nesting areas.

It's been reported by Sun staff writer, Laurie Krosney, that according to Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch Director Suzi Fox, the turtle nests covered by water as a result of the highest tide seen this season, are going to be alright.
Good news for us turtle lovers ;-)
Laurie reported that, "Lunar high tides combined with the passage of Tropical Storm Claudette in the Gulf caused problems for several sea turtle nests on Anna Maria Island."
"We had several nests under water for a couple of hours," said Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch Director Suzi Fox. "It always freaks people out to see that, but turtle nests are usually OK with some wash over or even with water that stays over the nest for a little while."
