Saving the Anna Maria Island Sea Turtles...
May the Turtles of Anna Maria Island Live On,
Long After any Evidence that Mankind was here, has Disappeared Forever!
When it comes to ensuring the safety of the local Anna Maria Island sea turtles... it comes down to the turtles and the tourists.
To the right, you will see Anna Maria Island tourists watching a local Gulf water turtle returning to the sea.
Lets face it, locally, most everyone's got it.
On Anna Maria Island, we understand the importance of altering our living and lifestyles in favor of protecting the local turtle population.
The problem or issue is that you simply cannot expect those coming here for the first time to automatically understand the issues we face living side by side with these truly majestic creatures of the sea.
That is were the local community and its support for the work done by Suzi Fox and her army of Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch volunteers.
Without the AMITW, the local turtle population would be in grave danger.
For example, according to Fox, "A lot of tourists, especially return visitors to the Island are calling or e-mailing AMITW to find out which rental accommodations are turtle friendly".
This is a good trend and an indication of the great job the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch has been doing education people about the local turtle population.
“A lot of these people have been on one of our beach tours during a previous visit, and they know about the importance of safe lighting and getting things off the beach,” Fox said. “They want to come back specifically for the turtles.”
What better motive for people to do their part than because they want the turtles to do well so they can come back the following year and see them again.
Suzi says, that next year, the people on the beach tours will be monitored to see where the people on these tours are coming from. The county has requested this information and it will be provided she said.
Once again we owe thanks to the work done by Suzi Fox and those individuals willing to give up their time to volunteer for the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch.
