Anna Maria City Pier...
While searching for Anna Maria Island related history, we came across an old phograph of the Anna Maria City Pier.
The pier in the photo to the right is located in Anna Maria City.
The original part of the pier was built in 1911 by Will Bean. This picture was taken after the pier had been enlarged.
The pier had to be enlarged in order to accomodate the large passenger steamers and groups of excursionists that were coming to visit Anna Maria Island.
At far left in the picture, part of the Anna Maria Bathhouse with its rooftop flags is visible.
In the early 1920's, Capt. Mitch Davis built two houses on the end of the pier. The house on the northern end, called the Lotus Cottage, was 79 foot long and was built for Tampa banker John Trice.
The smaller house was built as an ice plant, then became a short-lived fish-canning plant. Davis then rebuilt it as the Belle Haven cottage. One night it blew into the bay, but was salvaged and moved to dry land where the Anna Maria Island Historical Society renovated it in 2004.
