Hurrican Ike Floods Streets in Holmes Beach...
Rain from a heavy arm of Hurricane Ike flooded streets in Holmes Beach this morning.
It's been reported that on Holmes Beach this morning, three surfers skimmed the breakwater under rainy skies, but it wasn't the savvy beach kids who a lifeguard was worried about as the outer edge of Hurricane Ike brushed Anna Maria Island.
Collin Schmidt, who was on guard from the wooden tower out over the sand, was quoted as saying he was "watching out for beachgoers who just wanted to wade into the rough surf and feel the power of the large waves. Rip currents can be really bad now. There's a lateral current going north that's really strong".
The forecast for the rest of the day in Manatee County was for scattered showers "but a drying trend," forecaster Mike Cantin said at 11 a.m. Wednesday. He predicted the maximum rainfall from noon on Wednesday would be 3/4 of an inch.
"The system that went over Manatee this morning has moved on - to the northwest," Cantin said. It's forcast that as the day wears on, Hurricane Ike and its outer bands were predicted to pull away from the west coast of Florida.
Hurricane Ike is taking a west-northwesterly track across the Gulf of Mexico toward Texas.
