65 Foot Fixed Span Bridge Proposed for Anna Maria Island...
Although the planned 45-day closure (for repairs) of the Anna Maria Bridge is just around the corner, a much taller "fixed span bridge" may be in the works. Because so often boaters have to wait for the existing Anna Maria drawbridge to lift so they can pass under, a taller fixed span bridge is being discussed as a possible, more permanent solution.

Boaters are keeping watch on a proposal that could bring a 65-foot tall fixed span bridge to Anna Maria Island. "I think there would be a lot more traffic that would come through here without a drawbridge," said boater, David Morse. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for some three months now has been testing the waters, passing out surveys and have come to the conclusion that only three of the 1,000 boats that used the channel were more than 65 feet tall.
"I couldn't imagine bringing in a boat that needed 60-feet span or more up through the Intracoastal anyway," Morse said. According to FDOT leaders, the potential project is only in the research stage right now, and money for the design right-of-way and construction has not been budgeted yet.
The study was set up by the FDOT at the request of Anna Maria Island city mayors and Florida state representatives. The FDOT says it would consider a higher fixed span bridge or another drawbridge only if there were enough tall boats (needing to pass through) to justify the expense of the project.
Naturally, some local residents are concerned a fixed span bridge to Anna Maria Island would change the character of the island.
