Beach Wedding Festival a Big Success...
According to local Anna Maria Island wedding merchants, the first ever Anna Maria Island Wedding Festival was a great success.
Tradition Wedding Celebration Not So Traditional Anymore
Traditionally, most 'bride and grooms-to-be' believe they are to wait for the wedding reception before beginning their wedding celebration.
According to one Anna Maria Island business owner, waiting for the reception to begin celebrating your wedding is just plain old fashion.
Couples attending Sunday's Wedding Festival on Anna Maria Island learned that weddings today commonly do not stick to wedding tradition... and waiting until wedding reception to celebrate is one of them.
According to Amy Welch, owner of Acqua Aveda Spa of Anna Maria Island, "We believe that the whole day should be a celebration. We will do your wedding parties' hair and makeup and we will serve you and your guests mimosas and champagne.
In other words, getting ready should be fun."
Couples Visit Anna Maria Island Wedding Vendors
Hundreds of couples visited a number of Anna Maria Island wedding vendors Sunday, during the first of what hopefully will become an annual wedding festival event, sponsored by the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce. The couples travelled from the Sun House Restaurant at 111 Gulf Drive to the Waterfront Restaurant at 111 South Bay Boulevard, while learning what Anna Maria has to offer those looking for the perfect Gulf Island destination wedding, as well as what's new in the industry.
The event was highlighted with a prize giveaway, sunset celebration and mock wedding at the Sandbar Restaurant.
A lot has changed since 1984 when spa owner Welch got married in a church in Milwaukee and had her reception for 350 in a nearby hall.
"That's what everyone did back then," Welch said.
Today, brides and grooms can decide between a 'destination' wedding and a more traditional church style wedding. If they choose a destination wedding, such as on the beaches of Anna Maria island, they have a lot to choose from. Anna Maria Island has a number of great wedding venues from which to choose.

"If I could go back in time and change my wedding, I might choose a destination wedding, too," Welch said.
